Planet Completes Acquisition of Sinergise; Set to Expand Planet’s Earth Data Platform

Call Organizer

Organizer of the Sentinel Hub Custom Script Contest (hereafter: Contest) is Sinergise Ltd., Cvetkova 29, Ljubljana, Slovenia (hereafter: organizer).

Contest Duration

The Contest takes place from 4th August 2020 until midnight of 30th November 2020.

Contest Publication

The Contest takes place on the website www.sentinel-hub.com/develop/community/contest/.
The purpose of the Contest is to spread knowledge, new and innovative ideas and scripts, which can be freely shared with all who are interested. The scripts will be shared through the organizer’s GitHub repository.

Prizes

All submitted scripts will compete under one common category no matter which data collection (Sentinels, Landsat, etc.) the scripts were used for, or if the script is eo-learn-based or not. The organizer will award the best three custom scripts as follows with the following awards:

  • First prize: 1,000 EUR + 1-year Enterprise Sentinel Hub account (worth 5.000 EUR)
  • Second prize: 300 EUR + 1-year Individual Commercial Sentinel Hub account (worth 1.000 EUR)
  • Third prize: 1-year Individual Commercial Sentinel Hub account (worth 1.000 EUR)

In addition to above, the organizer will award special prizes to:

  • the best eo-learn-based script: 700 EUR
  • the best custom script submitted by a high-schooler or a high-school team: 300 EUR + a box of goodies large enough for all team members

The organizer is encouraging the participants to submit their scripts before 20th September. Among all the early bird submittions the following will be awarded:

  • the best custom script with 500 EUR
  • the best eo-learn-based script with 300 EUR

The scripts winning the early bird awards will also compete in the overall competition at the end of the Contest.

All winners will also get an opportunity to highlight their winning scripts in the Sentinel Hub blog.

Contest Terms

Everyone who submits hers/his script accepts these Terms of the Contest.

The employees of organizer and connected companies and individuals that participate in the implementation of the Contest, may not enter the Contest.

All participants in the Contest are aware of and agree to the general terms and conditions of the Contest, made available on the official Contest web page and existing in physical form at the organizer’s main office, Cvetkova 29, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Scripts' Requirements

All scripts must run within the Sentinel Hub EO Browser or multi-temporal instance of Sentinel Playground (for multi-temporal scripts) and have to be handed in as text files until 30th November 2020 (23:59 CET). To qualify for the early bird awards, the scripts have to be handed in until 20th September 2020 (23:59 CET). By handing in a script, the participant confirms to be the sole author(s) of the script and to have the necessary rights to do so. Every single participant or group can hand in up to three scripts.

All entries must be licensed under the Creative Commons BY license, so they can be added to the organizer's custom scripts repository and be used freely by all.

Together with the script, participants have to hand in a proper description on what their script can be used for and explain how it is achieving that. Besides the general description of the script the following information is required:

  • Scripts applicability
  • False detection problems (if any)
  • Detailed description of how the script works
  • Representative cases / images with details
  • Visualization in EO Browser or with multi-temporal instance of Sentinel Playground (a link to a working script)
  • References
  • Credits - In case your script is based on other people’'s work make sure to include the necessary citations and links to relevant papers.

Beside the above, the eo-learn-based scripts also need to comply with the following:

  • The process has to cover a machine learning technique and it has to use eo-learn. The result of the process has to be an actual custom script.
  • The participants have to submit Jupyter Notebook or Python code (as an open-source).

Submitting Scripts

In order to submit a script, the participant needs a Gmail account. If she or he does not have one, a new Gmail account can be created by following instructions published here. With a Gmail account the participants can submit their script by filling in the forms available at the following link:

Grading

The jury will judge and grade the submitted scripts by 3rd January 2021. Every script will be judged by:

  • Originality
  • Scientific relevance
  • Global applicability (scripts, which can run on different parts of the world will rank better)
  • Business / Commercial potential
  • Visual appeal

Winner’s Announcement

The winners will be announced on the official Contest web page latest by 8th January 2021.

Informing the Winners and Collecting the Prize

The winners shall be notified with an e-mail within 3 working days after the announcement on the official Contest web page. The winners shall send an e-mail with their personal data (Name and Surname, Address, Bank Account Number, Bank Information, Tax ID Number, Personal ID Number) to the organizer within 8 days of receiving the notice from the organizer.

In case of a special prize for the best script submitted by a high-schooler or a high-school team, the winner(s) will need to provide a proof of student status, the name and address of the education institution they attend to, and a name of a mentor (if they had one while developing the script).

In case a winner(s) will not submit the requested data in the provided deadline, it shall be assumed that they do not wish to get the prize and their claim to it will thus be void. In such an event, the organizer shall be free of any obligations with regard to such winner(s). It is the decision of the organizer whether such prize(s) shall be awarded to another person(s) or not.

The organizer reserves the right to not award the prize(s) if:

  • The winner(s) fail(s) to meet the requirements to claim the prize
  • Any doubt arises about the validity of any of the data (false profile, etc.)
  • It is determined that the user(s) participated in the Contest is in violation of the terms and conditions of the Contest

By participating in the Contest, the participants agree in advance and give their consent that, in case they become winners, the organizer publishes their name, surname and country as well as the name of the script on the official Contest web page.

Each winner has the right to decline the prize. In case the winner(s) decline(s) the prize, it is understood that they do not wish to get the prize, and as such, the organizer shall be free of any obligations related to the Contest with regard to such winner(s). At the same time, the organizer shall claim the right to use such prize(s) for any purpose the organizer deems fit. The prizes in a non-monetary form cannot be switched nor exchanged for money. The right to claim the prize is not transferable.

The winners awarded with the Sentinel Hub account need to inform the organizer within 6 months from the announcement to which Sentinel Hub account should the award be tied to. The winners can use existing Sentinel Hub account or create a new one here.

Minors as Prize Winners

If a prize winner is a minor, a parent or guardian of any participant who is a minor must sign a release on behalf of the minor to be eligible to receive a prize, but the organizer reserves the right to refuse to award a prize to or on behalf of any minor.

Registering Your Prize with the Appropriate Tax Authority

If the value of the prize is above EUR 42.00, according to the Slovenian Personal Income Tax Act (ZDoh-2), personal income tax is deducted, and the value of the prize is included in the tax base of the recipient of the prize.

In the case that the winner is not a resident of the Republic of Slovenia, the taxation shall be subject to rules from the appropriate international treaties for the avoidance of double taxation. It is the responsibility of such a winner to take care of the taxation duties on their own.

Changing the Rules

The organizer reserves the right to alter the terms and conditions of the Contest at any given moment due to content-related, commercial or technical reasons.

Consent

By participating in the Contest, each participant (in case of minors, a parent or guardian) gives to the organizer their individual consent to have their data used and processed by a computer software for the purposes of the Contest. The participants in the prize COntest also agree that the organizer keeps, maintains and supervises all the collected personal data of individuals in accordance with the law. The organizer provides protection of personal data in accordance with the law. The participant of the Contest authorizes the organizer to process the collected data for the purpose of informing about the Contest and for other marketing purposes.

By participating in the Contest, the participants agree in advance and give their consent that the organizer publishes their script on the organizer’s GitHub repository, if the organizer decides to do so.

Dispute Settlement

Any dispute with regard to the Contest shall be submitted to the competent court in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Validity of the Rules

The Rules enter into effect on 29th July 2020.
