Hi!

Before we all get into summer mode, we want to share the latest highlights with you. Learn all about the Digital Twin of the News app, and the ongoing Sentinel Hub Custom Script Contest. Check out the new Terrain Viewer in EO Browser. Sentinel Hub Landsat archive now covers 40 years of global data that you can explore. You can find the data in the newly added Landsat 4-5 Thematic Mapper collection. Read about how we improved spatial resolution using deep learning. See how insurance companies can benefit from remote sensing data. Join our live webinar tomorrow on the Batch Processing API and take advantage of this cool feature reserved for enterprise users. All this and more in this issue!

The Digital Twin of the News App

How we combine EO data with news articles in an automated fashion

Almost every day, a major extreme natural event occurs somewhere in the world and is reported in several news stories. To better assess the situation on the ground and get a more comprehensive picture of the event, satellite imagery can make an important contribution. But where to find event-related news articles and Earth observation images in one place? With the Digital Twin of the News, we have developed an app that provides just that: event-related satellite imagery and news articles. Read our blog post to learn how we do it, or check out the app right here.

New Terrain Viewer in EO Browser

Add a new dimension to your Remote Sensing with this collection of 3D tools

The Terrain Viewer has been updated with a brand-new 3D engine and a number of useful tools. You can now simulate the movement of the sun and its projected shadows at any time of day and year, manipulate the accuracy and strength of shadows, and even control the ambient, diffuse, and specular light factors of the terrain. You can also adjust the vertical scaling to inspect the terrain shape in flatter areas. Read the blog post to learn more - see cool examples like creating beautiful 3D sunset images and animations, how the tool was used to find a missing person, and explore the famous Maratona dles Dolomites!

Sentinel Hub Custom Script Contest

Participate in the new special edition - Urban Growth in Africa

With the help of EO Browser and Euro Data Cube, we aim to demonstrate the power of a deep multi-temporal and multi-resolution data cube over Dakar, Senegal. We have combined open datasets (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat) to obtain dense time series over a long period of time, and commercial datasets (Pleiades, SPOT, PlanetScope and WorldView) for detailed insights into the area. Join the ongoing Contest focusing on change detection and urban growth. Use the provided high-resolution data and tools, and submit your scripts before July 25, 2021.

You can participate without any programming knowledge. Use EO data to either write a matching story or create a pin story! If you need help with your first pin story, check out our step-by-step guide on how to register, get more data, create/export your pins, create a pin story, and submit.

Landsat 4-5 Thematic Mapper Data Available

Landsat data within Sentinel Hub have been expanded by Landsat 4-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data for more than 30 years. The Landsat TM sensor, located aboard Landsat 4 and 5, provides 6 spectral bands and 1 thermal infrared band. It's global coverage extends from July 1982 to May 2012 with a 16-day revisit time. The data is widely used for vegetation monitoring, land use, land cover mapping, and change detection. We have added both Level-1 and Level-2 data to Sentinel Hub Public Collections. You can also find them in EO Browser under the Landsat 4-5 TM data source. Details can be found in our documentation.

Multi-temporal Super-Resolution on Sentinel-2 Imagery

Enhancing the spatial resolution using deep learning, including tips, tricks and technical details

Sometimes a resolution of 10 meters just isn't enough. We used imagery from the Deimos satellite to train a multi-temporal super resolution network to bridge the gap between (free) Sentinel-2 and commercially available VHR imagery. Take a look at a technical deep-dive of our workflow with tips, tricks, technical details and challenges. We also published the code so it can be used and adapted by anyone who wants to replicate our process or create their own.

Enabling Insurance Companies to Monitor Natural Hazards from Space

A guest blog post

Remote sensing data, such as satellite imagery, is a rich source of information that can add value to various fields and industries. Insurance companies are savvy users of statistical methods to fine-tune their business model and risk exposure, but many have not yet mastered the use of remote sensing data. Read a guest blog post by Nejc Dougan, to learn how Copernicus data, Sentinel Hub and GMSGIS were used to create a fully integrated and automated solution for Natural Hazard Mapping.

Euro Data Cube Public Collections and Bring Your Own Algorithm

EDC updates

c9246288-4f4c-11e9-a3c9-06b79b628af2%2F1624350990955-EDC_symbol_blue.pngIn recent months, we have on-boarded several public data collections that can be easily accessed through EDC core services; CORINE Land Cover, Urban Atlas 2018 or ALOS-2 ScanSAR are just a few examples. To help you browse these data collections or even share your own, we have created a dedicated registry. EDC also allows you to bring your own data to the platform and share it with other users. But we don't want to stop there. We are now working on offering an option to bring your own algorithms (BYOA) to the platform. This will enable you to run your analysis on a global scale. More information will follow in the coming months, keep an eye on it!

Other Updates

  • Sentinel-1 GRD products since 2014: We've added more than 350,000 products to give you insights into the Earth's surface between 2014 and 2017. Read more.
  • Growing EO Browser language family: Slovenian language support was added next to English, German, Spanish, Polish and Greek. More languages will follow in the coming weeks. Explore EO Browser.
